This is one of the four patriarchal basilicas of Rome. Built by Sisto III during the V century AD, people are used to mistake this basilica for the little church built by the Pope Libero; according to a legend this last one is built above the place where during the summer 352, the Madonna made an appearance, just before that the snow fall down. That is why the church is called Santa
Maria Della Neve. The facade is composed of a nice lodge of three arches where you could find behind nice mosaics that represent the miracle. The interior is divided in three little naves. The central nave has a splendid ceiling decorated with painting of the Renaissance; some mosaics of the V century decorate the naves (scenes the Ancient and New Testament) and the triumphal arc (jesus's childhood) You could also find inside the "Trionfo di Maria" a Jacopo Torrifi's mosaic realized in 1295 The most interesting items are the Madonna of the altar; the lodge's frescos of the XIV century and the cosmatesco's floor In marble of the medieval age there's also a canopy of 1700 Outside .there's a Roman bell-tower of 75 metres high the highest of the city 1be domes have a baroque style 1n spite of the various architectural styles the harmony exudes from the edifice the main facade Situated on Santa Maria Maggiore plaza Is ornated with the column of the peace; a Corinthian column In marble, the only one which still stands up among the eight others which ornated Massenzio's basilica, it bad transferred here by Paolo V In 1614
